If your local BT exchange has been "local loop unbundled", than you can get a line direct from another provider (e.g. Bulldog, Plusnet, Wanadoo) - it is still a connection to the BT exchange, but provided by someone else. However, they may have to get BT to install it for them, in which case you'll still have to pay a fee.

If your exchange has not been unbundled then you'll need either a cable (NTL / Telewest) or BT line.

I on with ntl and i didnt pay a connection fee, their broadband is ok, had no problems so far and reasonably priced too, they do a package for £30 telephone line rental, broadband and digital base TV pack.

We have broadband through ntl,it didnt cost us anything.we have the family package which costs £30 per month, right now we have the special offer which costs £15.the offer is not on any more, but still 30 a month I think is a cracking deal.7.50 a week.we didnt pay for connection.

you need either a active bt phone line or get cable broadband. there are a few other ways eg satelitte and there is a radio one too but these are very expensive and in some cases run slower than cable broadband

do NOT go for Tiscalli - I had all manner of problems with them. I am now with BT and everything is ok, but I understand you not wanting to pay the connection.

I don't know if it would work but would an wireless connection do it?

You could try and see if getting a b.t line and using b.t broadband would make them lower the connection charge.
They can do this they did it for me for nothing
