Yes. In some states there is a process called a "Relief from Civil Disabilities" for persons with a felony. In NY must be only one felony. I believe it is granted by the court that convicted you.
This allows you to go into certain licensed professions that a felon could not otherwise do.
Live clean and behave.
You must always respond truthfully on any application regarding an arrest record.
People that have a felony have been able to become lawyers and other licensed professionals. The degree and nature of the crime play a role.
I am not sure of the current status, but several years ago there was a convicted murder in Arizona, James Hamm, that had turned his life around and was trying to become an attorney. He had commited premeditated murder in a drug deal. There were many in favor of his becoming admitted, but also those that felt he was not suitable. Read about it at http://www.law.arizona.edu/Journals/ALR/ALR2006/vol482/Carey.pdf
Good luckl

i was never convicted of a felony, but maybe could have been, i try to stay out of trouble now, i have a BA in Philosophy and teach in China. I'm still not a model citizen but i don't do anything stupid. I do have some lesser charges greater than misdemeanors that were never really decided on, i wonder if they would show up on a background check, like if i wanted to teach in the US. I know that I can't get high level security clearence and thus i can't be president :^(

Someone very close to me spent 2 years in prison on a drug conviction. There he learned to read, got his GED, and went through rehab and now he's a journeyman carpenter making big bucks and considering returning to college in order to become a master carpenter. He's had to work hard to overcome the discrimination associated with a criminal conviction, but he lives by the mantra that It's really what lessons you take away from the experience and how much effort you put into improving your life that count.

Yes, I actually do know such a person. He is my son and he recently got parolled from prison. He was in and out of jail for years and finally was sentenced to a prison term. He is on parole now and is really turning his life around. I believe a person either rises above or doesn't. You pick how your life is going to be through your thougts and actions. I also believe a felon, in order to get a real chance in the free world, needs to have lots of support, like family, which my son has lots of.

Depending on the nature of the felony, you may be branded and forced to work for yourself.

Bertrand Russell was convicted of a felony, but it didn't seem to hold him back. He was already quite well educated though.

Yes, but in this case it was an obvious miracle from God. A man I know killed someone in revenge for a robberie. In prison, he converted to Christianity. One day his records simply dissapeared, so the court thought there was no reason to have him in jail. He was serving a life sentence, but then was released for this reason. Today he is a minister in Texas and has been for the last 20 years in Florida, Puerto Rico, and other parts.
