There are two main purposes. To test the safety modifications and to send supplies and another crewman to the space station. Read all about it on the NASA web site.

Go to the library and read some major newspapers from last week. Use a search tool such as Yahoo or Wikipedia (there are lots more) to search using "discovery shuttle 2006" and read some of the responses.

That's what homework is for... you do the work, not us.

I think that the first is to find out the cause of the disaster that struck Discovery. The second is to send an astronaut(a Russian, perhaps) to the ISS. The last would be to supply needies to the ISS. Hope I 'm right.

they launched discovery cause they had to bring supplies to the moon bass there. and the reason why it did not go off sooner is cause foam on the outer bass of the fuel tank broke off and if they launched it the same thing that happened to Columbia the shuttle when they came back would have blown to pieces

they went up to ressuply the ISS, do some repairs on the ISS including space walks, and deliver a 3rd long-term crewmember to the ISS( International Space Station). The 3rd crewmember is German and he'll be staying on the ISS for 6 months.
