What do you mean by "students who are exempt"? Exempt from what?

Basically, everyone pays FICA. The above comment that FICA is not deducted is simply WRONG! The exemption claim on the W-4 Form is ONLY for Federal Income Tax withholding. There is NO exemption from FICA!

FICA is deducted on any earnings. If you want to benefit from them and fall in the catagory they are subject to, you must report and pay them.

If you filled out your W4 as "exempt," no FICA is deducted.
