This has happened to me. I ran over a squirrel and my son was in the car. He asked me why didn't I swerve to avoid killing it.. poor innocent squirrel. Now a squirrel (some people call them tree rats) is not as cute as a bunny rabbit but still we both felt awful over it. The traumatic part is really seeing the squirrel run in front of the car and you can't do anything about it, then the thud of hitting the tire, then looking back in the rear view window at the dead body ..ugh. You have to explain to your son that you couldn't have done anything about it, it happened too fast. You could have swerved but you would have put yourselves in danger from a car accident. Tell him the squirrel died quickly and wasn't in pain for very long. Go outside on a clear summer night and say "I'm sorry" with him to the stars in the heavens, tell him everything will be all right, then go back inside and play a game with him. He won't forget about how you ran over the rabbit, but at least it will be resolved and reach some semblance of closure.

I ran over a rabbit this past weekend. I hate to hit anything, so I was slowing down trying to miss it, and another one ran right out and into the path of my car. It was totally unavoidable, but I still felt really bad. You just have to face the fact that it was an accident, and these things happen. I'm sure it won't be the last time this happens to you, sad as it is.

You ran over a rabbitt? Thank God that you didn't run over a rabbit!!! No need to do anything, it died quickly, better than being eaten by a cat or a hawk.

Hey, don't beat yourself up over it. Sorry the little guy was killed, but if it happened on accident you shouldn't feel that bad about it. As for your son, reassure them that accidents happen, and that life doesn't last forever, but also note of the good things about life. Hey, eventually he'll forgive you for this. Just make sure you watch the road a little bit better next time.

If you are a Christian, you could say a little prayer for the rabbit, and have your son join in. Or a little service for the rabbit.
Saying a little prayer for forgiveness always helps me. Sometimes it just can't be helped, I feel horrible too when it happens

In my family running over rabbits is bad luck becuase one of our friends died 3 days later. We've never ran over a rabbit since. Why did you tell your son?

Spray the underside of your car to get the guts off. If you don't it will start to smell.
