Africa used to have the Atlas bear but it went extinct in the mid 1800s because of habitat destruction and hunting (1). Very sad!

Probably because they originated in the North
Temperate zone and haven't been able to spread
into Africa. There are more different kinds of bears in Asia, which may be where they first
appeared. At least two of these live in hot climates
in southern Asia, the sun bear and sloth bear, so
heat may not be a limiting factor. There is only
one kind in South America, and it lives in mountains
where it is relatively cool. North America has three
and one of these, the black bear, lives in the warmer parts of the area, as well as the cooler ones. Australia, of course, has none.

I think bears would be edged out by large herbivores such as a herd of elephants or large rhinos and hippos. Over 80% of a bears diet is plant. There may have been sloth or prehistoric bear like animals many millions of years ago but that niche would be occupied by a large herd of elephants for which a bear, usually a solitary animal, would have no solution for how it gets to eat. Needless to say many large elephants with large tusks is more than a single bear can deal with.

As far I'm aware bears only live in the Northern hemisphere.
There are bears in India so the "too hot" hypothesis dosen't stand up amazingly well.
I suppose they would also suffer in competition with Africa's carnivores.

i think the real reason their are no bears in Africa is because they would have too competition from other carnivores that live in packs. Bears are solitary animals where a lot of the carnivores (lions, hyenas, wild dogs,) live in family groups..That would be to much for bears to handle..especially having to deal with lions..1 bear against a pride of lions would mean death for any bear...I think that is also why bears became extinct in Africa..Maybe too much competition from lions..It's not like they would be able to climb trees to escape an attack of a pride of lions
