my dads friend told him to tell me not to buy a gibson sg because it cannot be played sitting down is this true

no... i have an epiphone sg (which is pretty much the same body style, though made in a different place) and often play it seated.

Heck yes you can. You can even play a Gibson Flying V sitting down. I don't know why he would tell you that. Gibson guitars are the only way to go man. The sound and playability is far beyond other guitars. That's also why they are more expensive than most guitars also.

wrong. I have a 1967 Gibson Melody Maker JR (which has an SGs body) and it totally rocks standing up or sitting down. I also have a huge grestch and I can even play that sitting down, so I dont know what that fool was talking about.

As mentioned above you can def. play it sitting down. I personally don't like playing an SG sitting down because the way they make the neck it feels further away from you while playing chords ont he 1st few frets. In my opinion a Fender Strat or the Strat body is the most comfortable to play sitting down. Also keep in mind that SGs are very neck heavy.

Gibson is the best guitar in the world! Standing, sitting or lying if you have to. Play it hard and loud!
