As far as making connections, my situation might be different than yours, but I am constantly running into people who work for my agency in stores like Walmart and Target. They wear uniforms so its easy to spot them. Long story short, I always keep business cards and a pen on hand for just such occassions. The last guy I met was actually a superintendent. We had a nice chat right there in the store. If nothing more, always be prepared. If you're able to attend alumni meetings, do it! Try networking on an place like Monster.
