If you search the web you'll find that there's a lot of disagreement, not only on how dangerous various snakes are, but even on the toxicity of their venom. So this answer is given conditional to the above.

The Australian inland taipan has a deadlier toxin than any other land snake in the world. The Australian brown snake, however, delivers more venom per bite, and so is more likely to deliver a killing bite. But certain species of sea snake (of which there are at least 52) have the most toxic venom of all, which makes trawling the south seas for fish a somewhat risky occupation (even though these snakes are generally fairly placid). The beaked sea snake's venom is potent enough that a single droplet could could kill three grown men (5.67 according to some accounts!)

The most toxic snake in America is the coral snake, but as it's fairly placid the rattlesnake is recognised as being the most dangerous (being responsible for more fatalities).

Note that many toxicity ratings are based on scaling up from tests done on mice. This is not necessarily an accurate indicator of toxicity in humans (note that the venom of the Sydney funnelweb spider is specifically deadly to primates, and so specificity is also a factor).

As a footnote, the housefly is regarded as the most dangerous creature on the planet. It can harbour more than forty deadly diseases.

The most dangerous land snake in terms of the most venomous - is the Taipan (New Guinea/Australia)

The most dangerous land snake in terms of most agressive would be the Black Mamba or the King Cobra (it's a close run thing but I'd rather fight the King Cobra if I had to)

And as a previous correspondant suggested the most poisonous snakes of all are sea snakes - but I'm not sure that makes them the most dangerous - I don't spend much time swimming around coral reefs taunting the snakes though.

I'd have to agree with Steve. You have to realize, though that the chances of getting bitten by a poisonous snake are about the same as getting struck by lightning-- very, very low. Most snakes (especially in the wild) are much more afraid of you than you are of them. You are so much bigger than they are. Most snakes will not bite unless they think they are attacked. Watch where you step or sit down or put your hands.

The most common dangerous snake in America is the rattlesnake (all varieties.) They are found in all states except Hawaii, so are the most common. If you are walking along and see one sunning itself on the path, give it a wide berth. Don't get any closer than four of your body lengths, so it won't get nervous. Don't try to be too stealthy in the woods, and animals will generally hear you coming and avoid you.

Most people seem to think that the most dangerous snake is the Cobra...but it isn't. It actually is the Inland Taipan. Highly venomous, I think.
