Yes. It was that kind of offense. A red card offense. Should he got away with it, it would create a controversy about the referee's job. However, FIFA will need to investigate thouroughly about what Materazzi said to Zidane. Like diving, trash-talk should also get a serious attention from FIFA.

I don't care what Materazzi said, there is NO excuse for Zidane's behaviour. If Materazzi did or say something extremely out of line Zidane should have said so after the game in a press conference. Zidane's short temper not only hurt his own image, but perhaps cost his team, his teammates and his country the World Cup. Again, there is NO excuse and Zidane certainly deserved the Red Card.

P.S. I thougt that Zidane was the player of the tournament until the incident. I was cheering for France.

Yes. It is assault and battery. He got off light by a red card. I am neither an Italian nor a French - all I wanted was to watch a good game. Which I got.

If you did that to someone on the road, and if it is recorded by somebody with a video camera, what do you think will happen to you? You could be sued too.

Zidane got off light, I would say. Also I did not appreciate his behaviour after the game ended. He did not even acknowledge the cup or congratulate the opponents. He is 'professional' right? Did he behave like one?

Shame, Shame. He ended his career on a bad note in a fraction of a second. Instead of a being hero, he became a turkey.

In my opinion, Zidane really deserves a red card. It is clear that if you start physically attacking the other player, you'll get the red card.

However, I really also think that Materazzi MIGHT DESERVE A YELLOW CARD... ;) I cannot believe that a senior player like Zidane will attack someone without a significant reason. It is clear that Materazzi said something to Zidane before Zidane turned and head-butted him. So.. it is safe to assume that Materazzi said something venomous towards Zidane to put him over the edge.

In my opinion, Materazzi deserves a yellow card also.

Absolutely yes, he deserved the red card. No matter what the provocation might be, and he is no green horn in soccer, he is a professional player and at his level in sport, the team should always come first and with his career coming to an end, it would have been the smarter thing to ignore it, but settle the "little matter" after the game if he had to. That little bit of insult should have given him even more encouragement to win for France that would have been the perfect revenge, instead he let the entire team down and he left his career with a "black" mark, and now he gets "the Golden Balls Award" - for being the best player inspite of it all. He really is a very talented player but that incident will 4ever be remembered by fans and team mates when they should be remembering all that he has achieved and accomplished in his amazing career and they might have been celebrating the World Cup win instead. I bet he will regret that incident for the rest of his life.

Of course Zinedine Zidane deserved a red card for that vicious headbutt! If he was going to play in the FIFA 2010 South Africa World Cup, he should be expelled from soccer and all sports!

What Zidane did was the very definition of a red card!!! Even if he was hit by the other player, physical retaliation in ANY situation is a red card. It was a malicious attack on someone else. I am not an Italian fan, just to let you know, this is an objective opinion on the ruling itself. :)

Good question - the act definitely deserved a red card, however the ref didn't see it. In the Holland-Portugal game, Fico received only a yellow card for the headbutt because the ref "didn't see the actual incident." What this world cup lacked was consistency on the part of the refs.
