The expression "lactic acid" is used most commonly by athletes to describe the intense pain felt during exhaustive exercise, especially in events like the 400 metres and 800 metres. When energy is required to perform exercise it is supplied from the breakdown of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). The body has a limited store of about 85 grms of ATP and would use it up very quickly if we did not have ways of resynthesising it. There are three systems that produce energy to resynthesise ATP: ATP-PC, lactic acid and aerobic.

As your body uses ATP it replaces it with Lactic acid, this helps in rebuiling of tissue. It takes a while for this acid to be re absorbed and burns when the offended muscle is used after. It goes away in a day or three depending on your fitness level. Having a good sized bowl of Jello and a half hour on the bike after strenuous work out will help.

I think it's a lactic acid build up in your blood and muscles. Stretching after running or a heavy workout will help rinse the lactic acid contaminated blood from your fatigued muscles and allow fresh blood to enter alleviating the soreness.

I was told by my football coach that when we lift weights you are ripping the muscles a little bit. When the muscle heals it becomes stronger which could be the reason for the soreness.

When you perform a long run or hard workout, you are actually breaking down your muscle fibers. As they rebuild, you feel a deep ache. I'm sure there is a more scientific explanation, but this is the gist of it.

Muscles get built based on repeated inury. When your muscles hurt, they have been overworked. This is good, that's how they build up. Rest a day, drink lots of water and get back at it tomorrow.
