They spread the fascia and muscles to deliver the baby. This damage is often NOT going to be repaired by exercise (my belly is nasty). Usually it requires surgery.
As to when you can start exercising, the usual answer is 6 weeks, but check with your doc first just in case your situation is not typical.
In the early weeks you can do pelvic floor raises. Lie on your back with your knees bent and scooted up to your behind.
Then tilt your pelvis towards your belly button and squeeze.
Good luck. I have seen a few with c's recover nicely but a six pack is not likely. It also depends on how much skin damage you have. I thought I didn't have stretch marks, turned out they were all under the belly where I couldn't see. By the time I had my third, they were above the belly button. My skin is so destroyed that the thinner I am, the worse I look! It looks like the legs of an elephant!
My actual abdominal strength is excellent and my upper belly cuts up, but the lower abs need surgery.
Good luck. Hope yours isn't like mine.

A lot depends on the shape you are in when you get pregnant and how much weight you gained during pregnancy and if you exercised during pregnancy. I had a c section and was back in a size 6 within a few months. And I work full time, so it's not like I had time to go to the gym everyday! BUT I gained only 28 pounds, got pregnant when I was in perfect shape, and I exercised every day that I was pregnant. And now (2 1/2 years later) at age 36 you can see abs muscles. But I am also built that way. A lot of women have a hard time building mucsles.

It must just be the people you know. I know a woman with the best abs I've seen on anyone who had 2 c-sections. In most cases you can exercise normally after 6 weeks, but always ask your doctor at your 6-week check up. I think it has more to do with genetics and motivation to exercise than how you gave birth, but the incision does go through the muscle wall so that might have something to do with it.

Normally it is after six weeks but ask your doctor or midwife, I guess they might have better answer.
I had a c-section, my abs are not much toned, I guess it is because when I do my abs exercises, I'm afrais of what might happen to the operation so I do not work harder there.

it's usually recommended that you wait at least 6 weeks before lifting anything heavier than your baby - so exercising hard and doing crunches should wait longer than that really! It does depend on how well your scar is healing (you don't want to open it up again - it's more problem than it's worth). Wait 6 weeks then go and get checked by your Dr to see if they give you the okay to start exercising. Then start gently with walking and low impact general fitness exercise before slowly building up to more intense exercises like crunches. Don't rush it as you could do more damage than good - all the best!

I had a c-section 9 months ago..part of my abs are still numb and probably will be permanantly...sometimes its really tender...Directly after the section you are completely numb from the navel down...to the scar..My scar itches and if my undies rub it hurts..you son't feel much like working out straight away give yourself time to heal...Remember the bleeding must stop first or your not healed...

Because when you have a c-section, your obstetrician slices through your ab muscles, severing them. When they heal, there's scar tissue.
I would imagine you should wait at least 8 weeks, if not longer. This is a question you should ask your obstetrician.

You can probably start doing some abdominal exercises at about 6 weeks post op if all is well. Yes it is harder to tone after a c section.

most doctors will tell you not to begin any strenuous exercise until you go to your 6 week check up!! good luck. Don't get discouraged if you don't see direct results. Also a tip walking also helps with regaining stomach muscles
