You divide the circumference by pi which is approximately 3.1416

2006-07-10 03:03:14 · answer #1 · answered by Nelson_DeVon 7 · 1 0

By definition, the constant pi is the ratio of the circumference of a perfect circle with its diameter. If you know the circumference (probably from using a tape measure), then you divide that measure by pi to get the diameter. Since pi is unit-less, both the circumference and the diameter will have the same units.

The value of pi is approximately 3.1416, which is not too far from 22/7. However, pi is what is called a transcendental number, which means that it cannot be exactly expressed as a fraction of two whole numbers, nor as a power of a fraction of two numbers. Mathematicians have used supercomputers to calculate pi to a jillion digits, but they'll never have an exact value. However, if you are applying it to some measurement, you'll be able to get away with one of the approximations above.

Hope that helps.

The circumference id the number pi (3.14) times the diameter of the circle (or 2 times pi times the radius). The diameter will then be the circumference divided by pi.

use the equation: 2 x r x pi
if you divide the circumference by pi you will have the diameter

you know the circumference ,say 22 centimeters

you can substitute the value you have for the circumference in the place of 22 and dont forget to mention the units centimeters/meters

The formula for circumference is 2 * Phi * radius
so,
circumference = 22 c.m
2 * phi * r = 22 c.m
2 * 22/7 * r = 22 c.m ( since phi= 22/7)
radius= r =7/2 c.m =3.5 c.m

diameter= 2 * radius=2 * 3.5= 7 c.m

the equation is C=pi x d or circumference equals 3.14 times diameter, all you have to do is divide the circumference by 3.14 which is a shortened version of pi

This should be simple mate.
2*pi*r=circumference.

this implies that the diameter which is two times the radius is circumference/pi.

Hope this helps you.

Example: The circumference of a circle is 15.7 centimeters. What is the diameter?
Solution: C equals Pi times d
15.7 cm = 3.14 · d
15.7 cm ÷ 3.14 = d
d = 15.7 cm ÷ 3.14
d = 5 cm

circumference of the circleis =2piemultiplied by the radius
so now you can find the radius. now double the radius you get the diameter.
