Life without a sense of purpose is mere existence. Some young people begin to develop goals while they are still in high school. But, it's not uncommon for one to finish college and still not have a direction.

If you have time this summer, read Erik Erikson's "Youth: Identity and Crisis." It puts forth the late psychoanalyst's "eight stages of man" (by which he meant humankind). At each stage, we're faced with a challenge. However we deal with those challenges determines our level of satisfaction.

Those who have experienced "generativity," that is, doing something important in terms of preparing the way for the next generation, can enter the last stage of life with a sense of accomplishment and a continuing quest for wisdom.
