Best player of the decade! Some of you, learn some football! Don't watch 10 games every 4 years and pretend you are fans and you know ball!

Firstly, there is no basis for accusing Materazzi of being the villain or racist. Why people are suggesting he provoked Zidane is a mystery. There is no evidence to suggest Materazzi did anything wrong. The supposed professional lip readers employed to decipher Materazzi's language are not coming up with a definitive answer as there are many different interpretations of what could have been said floating around. For example, some sources say it was a racist slur by Materazzi while other say it was something about Zidane's mother, sister, and/or wife All we do know is that Materazzi and Zidane were talking back and forth. It could have been Zidane who provoked a verbal response from Materazzi which Zidane hated or it could simply have been a mutual exchange of obscenities. Nobody knows right and anything said is pure speculation based primarily on bias for 1 side over the other. These are things people who say Materazzi "must" have said something are overlooking in their rush to defend Zidane. There is no proof and it is simply a case of finding Materazzi guilty without evidence. Guilty until prven innocence. Simply because you hate someone doesn't mean they are guilty.
Secondly, people who portray Zidane as a normally calm person either do not know his tendencies or overlook the evidence. Zidane has a history of spontaneous violent outbursts on the field including other headbutting instances and stomping on players with intent to injure. .

Materazzi is a dirty player. There's no denying that. But his insults worked well yesterday. France had a better team in the second half and into overtime. Italy may well have lost if it wasn't for the Zidane send-off. In the end, it was a good play by Materazzi and Zidane was stupid to have went for it.

If you want to speculate on what Materazzi said, that's for anyone to guess at this point. Probably insults on his family, religion or he and his team's ethnicity.

Zidane is the best. He was my favorite player before and remains my favorite to this day. What he did was wrong. I will not say that it was excusable. But it makes you wonder what was said to make him react that way in the finals of his last world cup ever. I love Zidane to the end. People make mistakes. Thats why they have erasers on pencils. It was a big mistake and is not excusable (as said before) but I think people should focus on the good instead of the bad. France made it to the Finals. They got 2nd place. That is amazing to me. I am disappointed they did not win, but such is life. Zidane has performed so well throughout his career...he is utterly amazing. Focus on the positives people.. : )

poor Zidane, the argument goes that he was tired and at that level of duress, you dont really think that way and lose your head.

that sounds more like a local kids match....but we are talking about professionals...people who are highly paid to play for club and country at the highest level.....al that level, discipline is one of the most important factors and surely they all go through stress and tricks by opponents, but they learn to bypass that and play on....so what Zidane did is a mistake that cannot be put aside, specially at the level he plays (or played).

so sorry, Zidane fans, but he should not even have been awarded the golden boot, but it seems that the journalists had already voted him as the winner at around the interval....and so he got the award....

I used to think he was a world class amazing player. After yesterday's display of disgrace...the class has become an a**.

I would like to see people answering these questions to stop spreading unnecessary rumors about what was said or not said. Only Zidane and Materazzi know. Nonetheless, ZIZOU, you lost it...SHAME ON YOU!

I think that Zidane has class and great sportsmanship. I wonder how much the Italian Mafia paid him to do that disgraceful headbutt.

Zidane has been patient all through the match, while Materazzi looked so sneaky and racist.

He's excellent skilled player, just a bad tempered one. He acted idiot yesterday anyway, it's was his LAST game in national team ! So, it was the ugliest way to end his career. I felt sorry for him, but I am happy for the Italian victory, they deserved it, after the unfiar penalty at 7th minute.
