Does Italy really deserves the title and the epithet World’s greatest?

I would say yes, reservedly. Why? because - of the two goals, French's PK does not really count as a goal. It is a whimper.
But Italy's header was thrilling.
Other PK's at overtime is all a whimper. You have to decide - so the PKs are there. But real, soccer goals are the one you should look at. So, Italy win in that respect.
Look at the stats. They are so evenly matched. French did one step better - shots on goal, less fouls, controlling the ball (51% v 49% for Italy), all goes in favor of France. Their early goal was a psychological booster but they let it slip thru their fingers.
Zadan episode did not help the matter either. Otherwise, in PK, French would have won. But..............Italy is the champion and they played well. So - Yes - Italy deserves the glory... for the next 4 years.

Well in the way the tournament is set up than yes, but who knows, there were probablly a lot of teams who had off days in the quarter and semi finals, if they played three games against each single team they played it may have been more fair and it would have been a better way of being able to tell who is actually the World's Greatest. Except that would have to extend the tournament a very long time.

Yeah and I suppose France didn't dive in the World Cup. It's been a year and we are still celebrating. It's a great satisfaction to know that people like you are still *****!n @ moaning. We only care about the oppinions of the other italian fans or the national team players themselves. Oh and R035 I hope you know who Materazzi is.

No. Hands down.
Brazil should get it. They can play a beautiful game. Pity they were out.
I thought in this tournament Germany really deserved to win. Their games were goal-filled and were damn exciting to watch.
And again. No, italy doesn't deserve the title. Lucky them.

MY opinion NO, there was a lot of diving and "ow he hurt me" accusations this world cup by certain teams. Why go there? Australia showed great talent and acted like gentlemen even with that nasty dive from Italy.
Italy was very luck this time!

Why not?Who is there to decide it? The only way to decide is to play, they played, they won.. they played well with a bit of luck...if they won it that means they deserved it... if someone else would deservde it they would play better and get it

Yes!They managed to deal with the pressure(all the match-fixing scandals),they were united,great defense(Cannavaro&Buffon were fantastic),great attack,Team game anyway!!
10 different players scored,they were in great shape!!!
