I just bought a Dell SmartStep 250N off of eBay. It has an Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.4 GHz, 40 GB harddrive (4200 RPM), 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon video card, and 256MB of RAM (I think). Is this a good laptop? Will I be happy with it? I will use it for surfing the internet mainly.

I think you will be happy with it. It may drag a little bit with the 256 MB of memory, but it should serve its purpose, especially if you're on a high-speed connection. And I'm sure you got a good deal, too. Enjoy your new toy!

It would be sufficient for surfing the internet. But dont try running too many programs at once with only 256mb of ram.

That will do all you want and more. If you are just surfing and not gaming, you will find it to be wonderful for your needs. The RAM is low, so you might consider upgrading that if speed is a factor for you.

I think that is a good deal. Now I'd put in more memory, and possibly bigger harddrive, but it should work fine. I am an IT major, so I like more powerful machines...but that's me. It will still work well, trust me. gl!
