Definitely go through your start up items and delete anything you absolutely do not need.

Run a spy ware scanner several times each week to remove spy ware and ad ware. Those two nuisances comprise the #1 reason for a slow computer and slow Internet experience.

While browsing the web, be very choosey about allowing Active-X controls to install. If the site you visit wants to install an Active-X, make sure you trust the site.

There are many websites dedicated to helping you tweak your XP system. Search the web for "XP Tweaks Knox" and you will find a web site for someone that works for Microsoft. His tweaks and tips are free and work wonders. Leave off the Knox-part and you will find a bunch of other sites with other tweaks.

Most browsers operating in a computer that formerly used a dial-up connection, but now use broadband, may operate sluggishly because your browser needs broadband optimization. The tweak pages will help you fix that as well.

Good luck!
