I do not know what was said. Marco Materazzi knows what he said and only Zidane knows why he reacted the way that he did. At some point it may or may not come out. What is important here is that 'Trash Talking', right or wrong, is a part of all sports. It is a way of intimidating ones opponent, getting under their skin, getting in their head, getting them off of their game and in some extreme cases causing a foul or penalty or worse an ejection or disqualification. Most people know how to handle trash talking, 'Ignore it' or talk back (if you can handle it). Zidane did not handle this situation well and it most certainly may have cost his team the World Cup...

Zinedine Zedane played in Italy for many year and it is fair to assume he understands the Italian language. I presume that what was said by the other player referred to his age,his mother and whether or not his mother and father were married at the time of his birth. The Italian language is full of words and gestures which could wind anyone up to a head butt. We can be sure that whatever was said deserved a head butt..more the pity it was not what we term a "Liverpool kiss" ...full frontal and which results in two black eyes and a broken nose for the recipient.

No idea but it must have been REALLY bad. one of the World's best footballers would not wish to exit his final match via a red card and wouldn't have acted like that for no good reason! Especially not in his final game, and the World Cup Final.
Must have been really disgusting what was said to him I think and it's a shame he left that way. What else could the referee do though but send him off?? Unfortuantely nothing!

I think the Italian said that if Zidane got himself sent off, the Italian F.A. would contribute generously to his retirement fund

I do not know, mate.
According to him the verbal abuse metted out to him by Matzi caused him to react in the way that he did. However, he is to give his version of events sometime this week.
Like Beckham and Rooney, he was probably pissed-off by the way the match had gone. And he wanted to get off the pitch early.
In the end it was a great match that went into a penalty shootout which spoiled it.

Am I the only one who remembers him getting sent off in the last world cup for stamping on a Saudi player because he gave him stick for be algerian and playing for france (who colonised the place)...
The dude should act his age as should all the rest of these over-sensitive prima donnas...
He'll be remembered in the same vein as Eric Cantona now..a great footballer who can't control his temper...
