If you want the cheapest service, T-Mobile generally offers plans for less. However, if you want the "best" service, it's going to depend on where you live.
Typically, both Cingular and Verizon offer better service in rural areas because they provide dual mode phones (analog/digital). If you're going to use the phone in a metro area, your choice is a bit harder.
Try doing a search at http://www.antennasearch.com/ or http://www.cellreception.com Both sites offer a free search for your area. The downfall is, neither site tells you who owns the towers.
If you're interested in T-Mobile, you can find T-Mobile's coverage by going to http://t-mobile.com/coverage/?class=coverage.
Remember to use the carriers' free trial period to try out your phone/service before deciding. Every carrier offers from 14-30 days to do the "test drive" of your new phone.

Check in your area and see who has better coverage. I know that in my area Nextel coverage is better even though the aren't my favriote company yet my girlfriend that liked nextel has better coverage at her house with Verizon. I know liking the company is important but not having 100 dropped calls is usualy more important. So the keey is shopping for great coverage where ever you need to go.

Verizon is the best. I have Sprint and it is pretty good, but I wish I had Verizon.
