Everyone knows that Zidane has a temper problem! Materazzi was well aware of this when he purposely provoked Zidane. Though this does not excuse Zidane's behavior, it doesn'e excuse Materazzi's behavior either and I would lay the blame on Materazzi more than anyone else.

It was an act made on the brink of a nervous breakdown, with both teams at maximum nervous pressure to score in the overtime and avoid the penalty shootout. It seems that Materazzi said something to Zidane, nobody knows what, then Zizou made a run-up and head-butted the Italian player. The red card was deserved, although being given after a quick talk between Elizondo (the central ref) and the 4th referee, Luis Medina Cantalejo, who probably knew what had happened from the sideline referee that spotted the head-butt.
In the end it was a disgraceful end to a good career as a football player for Zidane.

Ungraceful, no doubt. Deserved by the Italian? I would say: no doubt. This doesn't mean that I agree with what Zidane did, but I know (and you know it, too) that words can cut deeper than the sharpest blade. Zidane must have been cut really deep, otherwise he wouldn't have done that. It is unfair that violent language is only seldom punished by referees. Zinadine simply reacted to something that was, probably, more violent than physical violence. We like it when we see it in movies (when the LAPD detective punches the rude and arrogant FBI agent, for example, at the end of the movie, and everybody is happy to see that), but we don't like it in a football tournament. Well, life is like this. Zidane is just a human being, he makes mistakes. He should have turned the other chick... There was a man who used to do that, but he was crucified, long time ago. No, Zidane didn't do the right thing, but what about Materazzi...?

What was he thinking???!!!
I wondered what was being said between Materazzi and Zidane to provoke such an shameful action...
I think maybe M insulted Z's mother or he may have been mocking the fact that Z's head tentavive goal was saved by Buffon and M's head goal got in...
The only thing that's sad, is that Zidane will be rememberred greatly for this gesture instead for his great carreer....

Russian news: David Trezeguet was standing near by while it happened and shared what he heard with journalists:

Zidane to Materazzi - you played with you hand, boy, used your hands
M - you're mistaken (it only seemed that way to you)
Z - that's the only way you can stop me. Just wait, we'll bit you in penalty and then you can find something better to do with your hands.
M - keep dreaming! In an hour your mother will (rude words) me, the champion!

Then Zidane hit him.
I would kill materazzi.

Waiting to hear the full story...not the classiest move, but I hate rewarding players that provoke other players by giving them what they want...just goes to show how all of the theatrics hurt the game...and I've seen a lot of head-butts...that one was pretty nasty, but no way a big guy like Materazzi should go flailing like that, especially when he knew it was coming (he was looking right at Zidane)...poor sportsmanship all around...

We don't know what Materazzi told him, some say he called him a "terrorist" ar that he insulted his sister Lili.
Anyway that's no excuse for what he did,and is sure is a bad example for children. And it's not the first time he acts like that,he did the same in a match with Juventus!!!
I'm so happy Italy won,and I think Cannavaro really deserved the Best Player Award, because he was absolutely fantastic!

He deserved the red card. No matter what Materazzi said, Zidane should not have lowered himself to such an act.

Because Materazzi said something to him and he lost his temper. Very poor form. If anyone else had done anything similar, there'd be a hooplah heard 'round the world
