I need EXPERT feedback as to what makes a hot rod a hot rod. What's the difference between a tuner car and a hot rod? Is a street rod a hot rod?

I'm working on/designing a book cover about hot rods for children and need expert or as close to expert advice as i can get (and my editor is not here today), so please if you have links post them. Thanks!!

A hot rod in the most classic sense is a car that has had weight stripped from it, and has had engine modifications made to it that make it go faster. The classic examples of hot rods were fords from the 20's and 30's that guys took the fenders off to save weights and to cut down on wind resistance. The engines were "hopped up", and in some cases the roof was chopped and other modifications were done to the radiator shell to decrease front end area for slipping through the air better.
A tuner car does certianly fit the pattern of a hot rod, since they involve putting more power into a small package, and doing mods to be more aerodynamic, but nobody calls them hot rods.

A true, classic hot rod? To me, you can't get any more classic hot rod than a '32 Ford hi boy roadster, no fenders, with a hopped up flathead V8 w/ a 3 carb setup. Preferrably with flames, or in primer w/ baby moons.

Aside from people building retro machines like that, nobody really builds hot rods any more. Newer cars are either customs, tuners, or high-dollar factory supercars.

You don't see guys dropping Chevy smallblocks into their Honda Preludes, and taking parts of the body off to save weight..that would be more of a hot rod. Installing wings and bodykits and fart can mufflers..that aint hot rodding. Some middle aged guy spending $50k or more (usually more) to get his '70 Chevelle restored then trailering it around to shows..that aint hot rodding either.

I have been a street racer for about 20+ years, a car buff all my life, and an author of numerous auto articles for various magazines and newspapers. There, that takes care of my credentials.

To me, a true hot rod is any car prior to 1973 that has been customized to make the car faster. Street tuners are more along the lines of imports that have been modified from stock for racing purposes.

I have a 37 ford pickup and everything mechanical from the front radiator to the rear end has been changed to a newer and more proficient part for speed and power.
