Can you not see light, or feel static, or hear when someone calls your name.
Energy is part of an interchangeable duality known as matter-energy. It is a less permanent form (not to be confused with phase) of matter that in the simplest explanation, as many of the others pointed out, allows work to be done.

energy is NOT air....air is an assorment of molecules from the periodic table of elements.
energy is NOT matter at all.
Einstein said that matter can be converted into energy, and vice versa, although the first is far more prevelant in teh universe. Everyone knows this, because everyone has heard of:
E=mc^2
What energy IS still eludes us today. The same goes for light. We know light is made of photons....but we dont know how or why photons exist.
We dotn knwo what gravity IS. we know what is does, and how it interacts, but we dont know why it does what is does.
Energy is made of charges, and electron particles, and fields, but we dont know how or why those fields and charges exist. the best answer is that energy is the force that binds everything, its what holds your atoms together, and keeps my atoms speperate fom rthis keyboard...without energy, the universe doesnt exist.

Energy doesn't really exist, it isn't a 'thing'. It is used as convenient way of explaining why certain things happen - most physics uses models to explain things.
One way of thinking about it is to use an analogy with money - If you have it you can do stuff, if you don't you can't. When you do stuff the money (energy) is the passed on to someone (or something) else.

Energy, itself, is never seen. From the sun we see the light, but we do not see what the individual photons are doing. We feel the effect of them. When tires turn on your car, you see the result of gasoline having been burnt, and energy passing through the tires, but the energy, itself, is never seen. In any manner of energy relationship in our world, the evidence of its presence is there, but the substance is not. Check it out for yourself.
The basis of all forms of energy is that of electromagnetic energy. This form of energy forms into mass, which forms into magnetic, electric and gravitational manifestations.

It's a fundimental thing: The universe consists of matter & energy. Energy binds the components of matter (eg atoms) together. Matter therefore has energy contained within it, and also between it eg. gravitational energy between 2 masses of matter. There's something called anti-matter too but that's getting way too deep in to physics for me... check it out on Wiki.

Energy is the conversion of static matter into dynamic action. Latent energy is "stored" energy, like the candy bar in your hand. Kinetic energy is what happens when latent energy is actually being expended, like after you eat that candy bar and the energy in it is used in your muscles. Energy is all around us, all the time.

Noble Laurette Richard Feynman said nobody knows what was energy. It is given as a number which remains constant.
