I believe it was George Mallory. As mentioned his body was found in descent ..but the thing that clinches it for me is that he always kept a picture of his wife in his pocket. He told her he would leave it on the summit if they got there...it wasn't with the other things found in his pockets.

mallory died coming down and as his companion, Irving, camera was found a couple of years ago I think it was so coroded they will never know. But the real question is was it Hillary or Tenzing who reached the summit first. As Hillary was from New Zealand and it coincided with the Queen's coronation it may have been been better 'politically correct' to say he reached the top. Tenzing and Hillary always insist it was a joint team effort so I suppose only they know the real answer. I have read several books on the matter and never gleamed the correct answer, History says Hilary.

No one knows for sure. Hillary is the first to have returned, but some feel that Mallory made it and died upon descent.

We will never know, but my impression was that the recent discovery of Mallory's body indicated that he was descending the mountain, which might suggest that he reached the summit.

Pretty good arguments that it was George Lee Mallory and personally I'd like for it to have been him but we likely will never know for sure.
