Being on top of things is always preferred.

If you want it with you all the time and do not have lots of demands (say email, Internet and your schedule), the palm top is the best.

If you need to have a good bit of computing power but need it to be mobile, go for the lap top.

If you needs lots of computer power for games, analysis or CAD and you expect to use it mostly at your desk, then go for the desktop.

A palmtop is limited only to PDA software (Unless you have big bucks and want a Libretto...). Palms, Pocket PC's smartphones, BlackBerries, and Librettos make up the Palmtops. The best thing is they go almost anywhere and fit in your pocket.

A laptop is a good choice if you want a computer for the road that runs a full operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac). They are more bulky than a palmtop, but offer most of the conveniences of a desktop.

If you want TONS OF POWER, customizability, upgradability, and won't leave home with it, a desktop is for you! The only con is they aren't portable.

It really depends on your needs. You have to first decide where you will want to have the computing power and use it the most.

If you are mostly doing a lot of the computing work at a stationary place, obviously, getting the desktop is probably the best idea as you will be able to take advantage of the most processing power available without sacrificing battery or worry about power issues since you are plugged into the wall. Most desktops offer the ability to upgrade should you wish to be get more RAM, hard drive , DVD writer, etc, especially on a clone computer. This is not as easy with the other portable devices.

If you are going to be travelling around often enough and don't really have a specific place where you are doing your computing and tasks, then, the laptop will be probably a better device. This offers you somewhat close to the processing power of a desktop but portable enough that you can carry everything with you like your drives, external devices, etc and it isn't too heavy to carry around. With a laptop, you will always have your computer with you everywhere, whether you're at home, or at the office, or in your hotel room, or on a plane, etc. Provided you have adequate power in your laptop battery, you should be able to work virtually anywhere.

A palmtop is for someone who wants the ultimate portability as he will be doing a lot of travelling around (consultant for example) who wants access to data who probably has access to a computer at work, or home and go away at a moment's notice. Being so small and lightweight, it offers the best portable solution as a lot of office type programs can be loaded on it, as well as wireless access and cellular phone (if you get a smartphone PDA). Unlike a laptop, the Palmtop is much smaller, more discreet and lighter. Of course, a lot of things may not be done on a Palmtop compared to a laptop or desktop but as long as he has the documents and information on the Palmtop, he can easily upload it or synchronize it to an office or home computer, without risk having it stolen (if left in a car, etc). The best thing is that since it's so small, you can carry it anywhere and it can still entertain you with video and music playing and of course, games all the while, you can still do work on it if you want to. You may compromise power but gain on space and weight.

So, it really all depends on the individual.

Depends on your needs. Palmtop is a portable slim downed version of a laptop. Laptops and palmtops are portable. Desktops aren't portable, but less expensive to purchase and make upgrades to.

A laptop is best, in my opinion.

Palm sized devices are too difficult to do anything really useful like extended writing, e-mails, etc and suffer from flow CPUs and slower internet connections.

Desktops are big, bulky, sometimes generate too much noise, and can't go with you on travel. They do have the advantage of huge amounts of storage and the fastest graphics.

Laptops are best because they are light weight, easily fast enough for most tasks, have nice displays, you can have one on your lap while watching TV, sit in bed to watch a DVD, and take it with you on a trip. Even big "desktop replacement" laptops take up less space than a desktop.

Depends on what you need it for. They all have their pro's and con's and therefore you need to ask yourself questions such as, "Do I need mobility with my device?", Do I need a ton of memory and processing speed?. They are all good devices, but you need to decide what you will be using it for and then decide which one will benefit from the most. Kind of like if you were buying a vehicle, lived in a congested city with difficult street parking, and worked from home and would drive only occasionally....would you buy a compact car or an SUV?

Good luck!
