Who here agrees with me that cheerleading is a sport? If you disagree and think that it isn't a sport, please tell me why you think that and i will disprove it.

We have weeklong tryouts (how long are football tryouts? oh thats right, you don't have tryouts)...We spend three or four practices LEARNING our cheers and our cute dances... (how long does it take you to learn your football plays? like 5 minutes, right?) We work for 5 or 6 ours trying to perfect our dances and cheers (you work on like 10 plays a practice right? thats like 10 minutes per play!)

andything else that i missed?

and if it is a sport, then how come Yahoo! doesn't have it listed as a sport? we need to speak up!

Yes it is a sport. I was a cheerleader for 8 years and it was a lot of hard work and devotion. 1 of the girls on are team received scholarships to cheer for college if it's not a sport how come they gave her scholarships. Now I believe she head of a big cheer leading team somewhere. Are school won state for 5yrs in a row I can't say that about are football team. Now that I have been out of school a while the school is still winning championships. The whole time we cheered we cheered for losers are football team never won but we did over and over. Ever time we went to a competition we won. We had 5 guys and 9 girls on are team we rocked. Not only did we work hard we had fun too. Are cheer leading team at are school received more new equipment then are football team because they sucked. That right there is enough to say its a sport. The only reason guys always say we are only to look good in little outfits. If we didn't work out all the time cheerleaders wouldn't look that good. There sure are a lot of fat football players. Cheerleader probably sweat more than football players do at practice.

This is an excellent question.

Strictly speaking, cheerleading is not a sport. While there are cheerleading competitions, cheerleading in and of itself is not a competition. That's not saying it's not competitive. It's HIGHLY competitive, but a lot of that plays out between squads at games.

So, cheerleading supports sports, but is not a sport. Its participants take it seriously and rehearse very hard to make it look so easy at game time. Although a lot of it gets lost in the vast space of a stadium or arena, seeing a good number performed flawlessly is an absolute marvel (and even more so when witnessed in the vast space of a stadium or arena).

Then, what is it? Cheerleading is akin to Dance, and therefore an art form.

My daughter takes dance in a place where cheerleading is taught. It's definately hard work, time consuming, and competitive, but then so is her dance so I'm not sure if it's considered a sport or not although I think it would be. But I also noticed that there were some sports, the not-so-common ones, were also not listed by Yahoo!. Maybe only the major ones become sub-categories.

It is a sport, I know what you mean. We (cheerleaders) work our butts off and they don't consider it a sport. Yahoo should change it. I think they should also include dance and gymnastics as sports 2. All, take just as much practice as any other sport. Its hard and we get hurt just as bad and as much as any other sport. People who consider it easy should give it a try THEN we'll see how easy it really is. They consider pool and darts sports but not cheerleading, that's not right. I don't know about football being easier, it takes just as much if not more work. Their practices are very difficult and take a lot of work. You cant say they don't practice enough or hard. Cheering isn't even a good name for what we do. We do much more than just cheer, we stunt, dance, preform acrobatic motions and even choreograph at times. Cheerleaders don't get enough credit.

Yes...and no. Cheerleading is a sport, but it's not really considered a sport by some people because it doesn't really have a competitive nature. I personally, would call it more of an art form than a sport, but thats just me. As a skateboarder, I also dont have my sport listed, because most people dont consider it a sport.

Yes! Cheerleading is DEFENATLY a sport. I used to be one. Until this year when I tried out for histeppers and made the team! Cheerleaders go through so much! Workouts, Memorizing a million cheers...And sometimes embarrassment! Yahoo sooo needs to change their list. Because cheerleading is a hardworking, dedicated sport!

YES cheerleading is Definitely a sport! They compete just like other athletes. At my high school our cheerleaders where the only ones who won titles and trophies. We had practice, 2-a-day, at 5 am and directly after school. Were in the weight room working out. Had weekend practices and all summer long. Games were used as extra practices. Competition was the main focus. Just like other athletes the cheerleaders have competitions. Many teams take their turns to try to win the honor of being state, regional or conference champs. You learn your stuff then you compete against other teams to see who is the best. There is very much athleticism involved. Show me any other athlete that can pick their teammate up, throw them in the air and catch them... and make it look so good.

honestly, i feel like cheerleading is unnecessary. you are only spectacles at a football game or alongside the basketball court clad with short skirts and your often provocative "cute" dances. true, you do practice hard and such but lets face it, the only people that tune into cheering competitions on television are families of the cheerleaders, college frat boys and old perverts. i can practice drinking all day, but that doesnt make it a sport, it just makes me a drunk. you can practice swivelling your hips and jumping up and down in your short skirts with your little friends all day trying to do it all uniform and such but that just makes you sex objects and eye candy to otherwise easily abstracted horney teenagers in your school or middleaged fathers of basketball and football players.

i view cheerleaders as a sexist activity. guys have had football, baseball, and basketball, and girls left with no real sport so they decided that you should do what you were "created for," supporting the men and entertaining in few clothes. but its so cute how serious you all take it, walking around like you own the school, overself confident for usually the wrong reasons. you DO know that that have girls baseball and basketball now, right? why dont you join a real sport and stop attacking the boys football practices, you obviously dont know the sport, maybe you should try attending a practice or attempt learning the game that you are CHEERING for.

i didnt think it was a sport untill i turned on espn a while back and saw the competetion. They had these girls from Paul Lawrence Dunbar, out of lexington, and these girls didn't miss a beat. You can tell they practice there hearts out and love what they do. So if a competetion qualifies as sport, then this is a sport.
Not as complex as football, and i think your relating it a little harshly, but still a sport none the less.
