The borugoise, for one

The old regime, by law, divided society into nobles, clerics and the third estate, basically "the rest".
When the law was written, "the rest" practically meant the peasantry.
By the time of the revolution, however, merchants, clerks, administrators and others had grown in wealth and numbers; they had taken over the functions of the nobles, as administrators and military leaders, and, in effect, where running society.
They made the money, made the decisions, and so forth.

However, the law prevented them from reaching the top of society, because they where not nobles.
As a result, liberalism, the idea that every man should be judged according to his own achievements, and be free of the restraints of a oppressive government, developed.
It was these ideas that where the ideological fuel for the revoulution.
