I mean all the questions I have seen so far were about Zidane, and not about MATERAZZI. I am not protecting Zidane, I think he shouldn't have done what he did... it's not good sportsmanship at alll... but shouldn't we cut him some slack? it's emotional enough to be fighting for a WC and missing a goal and someone tellls you something insulting ( especially if it is really something about ur mother)... I think a lot of us would do the same... and many people would even think that it's nobel to protect ur dignity...so who here thinks that MATERAZZI is the real A$$***** here who was just provocing a fight?

I know ppl have been saying that we don'T know what he said, that is true. but COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone actually believe that he didn'T say smth REALLY insulting? Zidane would never react this way for nothing, they didn't even fall over or anything, just talking..There was absolutely no reason for him to go out of control unless an insult..

If u watched almost all the games of Italia u could see that most of the players were playing "dirty" they were falling to the ground for no reason and they tease the opponents so they'll loose their control. So, I believe he's a a$$ like most of his co-players and Totti should have a collection of yellow or an oscar for drama!!!
I really believe Zidane should be patient and wait for the game to finish! Come on it was his last game ... 5' only to end!!!!

i think so. i actually think the whole italians are always picking up a fite with words to eliminate the other team. if that doesnt work, they go for it physically. i mean, i didnt really support france, but i didnt want italy to win at all. i just think they cheat TOO much.
They bought the ref in other games (like in germany vs them very obviously, dont deny it!).
Materazzi was extremely bad for doing that. I saw the rerun of the ENTIRE scene. it went like this:
Materazzi was holding onto Zidane's jersey duting some kind of kick-off. They are both known to speak fluent italian. So they started arguing. Then Zidane started walking away, trying to ignore and avoid a fite. But then Materazzi said something and Zidane spun around and did his thing.
So actually it's all Materazzi's fault. I hate it when ppl judge the event by the little rerun, of ONLY the head-butt, not the whole scene.

1. I guess it's pointless to call Materazzi in any harsh way, my dear.
Everywhere football is played bad words are raining on the field, not only between defenders and forwards. Real A$$ as you said are weakminded players who react with kicks (Rooney simple putting his foot on Ronaldo's leg was send off), spitting (Totti in UEFA championship '04), headbutts as Zidane did already in Champions League, Hamburger SV - Juventus 3-1 24 October 2000.
2. It's pointless to blame an insulting player AND defending an headbutting one... I live near the greatest market place in Europe, if every insult will receive an headbutt, I guess every day our population will decrease... and if a player receive a foul, more dangerous and potentially damaging than an insult to me, what must he do in your perspective? Kill the opponent, I suppose.
3. Finally, I want to point it out Materazzi isn't a poet or columnist. I can't think he invented new insulting terms, or anything Zidane had never heard before in his hundreds of match played... and I never seen a player send off for insulting an opponent...

Zidane is the A$$ because he is a great and experienced player and he should have known better "ole talk" as we call it here in Trinidad i don't really know what you guys call it something like playful banter which is the exchange of words it can range from name calling to insults are common in sports people do it all the time and Zidane should have known better to just walk away and be the bigger man. Even if Materazzi did say something to insult him he just lowered himself by his reaction.

I think the Italian player should be given a Yellow card. At least this is a warning that any bad mouthed is not tolerated on and off the field. Zidane is wrong, but the Italian is partly responsible too.

The real question is what Materazzi said! But it was Zidane's own fault - I can understand his anger, but as long as people don't know what the Italian said, we can't (well I) can't decide!

I think that not only Materazzi is a real A$$***** but the whole Italian team is A$$*****. not only in the final but even in the 2nd round against the Australia team when they weren't winning Grosso dived and you can not forget what is happening to all Italian Giants. they don't know to play in the right spirit and they do not deserve to be the world champions. they won because of Buffon and Cannavaro only players who know to play football from that team.

i played hockey for 12 years and i'm french do you know how many times i was called a frog by anglos??
was i mad at the guys who called me that ?
sure i was but i wanted to win even more because the best response to that is raising your hands in victory.
today i don't hold a grunge to any of the guys who called me that, you do what you need to do to get at the other guy's head.
that's it!
Materazzi did HIS job!
he took out France's best player,he did his job.

hey, Zidane did what he did knowing full well what the consequences were. I personally thought it was awesome. I hate the Italian team, I think they're a bunch of cheating, gay, diving, bastards. Hopefully all their players' club teams will be relegated to the 3rd division.
