How are you going to hold your shape without skin? It is the first line of defense between the environment and you. The wonderful thing about skin is that is protects you with both sides of itself. The outside acts as a shield and the inside acts as regulating buffer by releasing or retaining heat, salt, or water.

From what I remember of High School Biology, the skin acts as a barrier to microorganisms that would possibly infect the body. There are also several substances the skin secretes (sweat, tears, etc.) that are good at killing such organisms. It is also part of the homeostasis (sp?) system.

skin is the largest organ of our body about1.1 to 2.2 sqm.it protects our body from dehydration(loss of water),it provides a texture that helos us to grip things(imagine slimy hands),it prevents harmful organisms from entering our body,it protects our body from ultra violet rays.that's the long and short of it.
