It's definately your cataletic converter. Also your exhaust might be clogged. My car did the same thing and that's what fixed it. Take it to an exhaust shop or call around to different garages in your area and get it fixed.

Your catalytic converter is probably plugged and or your oxygen sensor is not working. Take it to your local shop for service and ask only to investigate the relevant problems. This is not a serious problem, but if left unchecked it can develop more problems down the road. Also emission control equipment carries a lengthy warranty,so i would consult a dealer first.

It's your exhaust. Once your catalytic convertor goes, the materials inside will create a sulfur, or rotten eggs smell. Replace your exhaust. It should cure your 'puttering' as well.

It does sound like your catalytic converter is bad. The internals of it could be causing a restriction in the exhaust pipe. This could account for the sputtering and the sulfur smell(i.e. rotten eggs)

Def the cat convertor. I took mine off and slammed a pipe through it to remove the honeycomb. It still passed inspection and ran great.

rotten egg smells are excessively rich mixture or unburnt fuel. its sounds like you probably need a tune up but you might have to bite the bullet and get it properly scaned to find the problem, or it could end up costing you more by guessing.

this car doesn't have a carbeurator as someone suggested it is too new to have one, it has a breather box. I would think it could be a leaking heater core or a problem in the air conditioner

Find a really big cliff.

Push car off cliff. (Make sure you are not attached to said car in any way).

Car go boom.

No more smell.

Timing for the sputtering, and catalytic converter for the smell.
