Why did he do that?
There are several reasons, however this is in no way an attempt at making his action legitimate.
1.Brazilian experts have said that Materazzi insulted his mother and/or his sister as well as his origins.
2. Though he only had 12 prior red car send-offs, zz is known to be very short tempered, this is unfortunately not the first head butt incident.
Note: since then he has become a calmer man. Almost all his fouls were provoqued.
3. Zidane has been fouled severly during this entire world cup. He does not deal as well with being fouled as other players might. Portugal targeted him a lot but the Italians were the worst of all.
In fact the Italians are known for this. Insults and intentional fouls are synonimous of Italian football. Materazzi is in fact a professional when it comes to insults.
4.Zidane has been portrayed as a god but he is a mere mortal an d to er is only human. If he is half man half god then this flaw is what makes him human: his temper.
5. So few are the players to ever have carried such weight on their shoulders that I am inclined to believe that nobody else has ever had so much pressure.
This was his last game.
Everyone expected him to perform.
He played his heart out.
This was the world cup final
Being held back and insulted was just the last straw.
Some psychologists have analysed his action as a form of denial of his image. The image of a larger than life hero is something that heroes such as Zidane often put a stain on. It is a claim to humanity.
For some tragic reason everyone seems to have just accepted insulting in football and T shirt holding.
I implore all those cold hearted, so far from human, to remember that he is not a god, a half god at best and that one flaw should not cast such a huge shadow on a lifetime of genius, generosity, strife and sacrifice.
Moreover I would like to point out that though the French fans have forgiven him in the blink of an eye, Zidane is so ashamed of himself that he barely dared to salute the ovation that awaited him. Only their deafening cheers stole a smile from this great man, feat which the French President could not accomplish while praising him.
Aller Zizou!
T'es le meilleur!
Zizou! zizou! zizou!

Here are a few observations about the World Cup and Zidane's dismissal:
1) Often the play in the World Cup was dirty and cheap, and the Italian players seemed to be the worst of the lot (but certainly not alone), lots of dives, over reacting, intimidating and whining. Ruined the mood of the whole thing. Nothing will be proven about what Materazzi said but I would not be surprised if it was very dirty and sanctioned from above as the whole Italian football culture seems less than noble.
2) As a professional athlete of international fame of 10 plus years, Zidane should have been able to turn the other cheek especially with 1 billion people watching him. But he is human and many men have probably been provoked by much less.
3) The World Cup games were really boring, especially towards the end.
4) A penalty shootout is a stupid way to decide the best team. One billion people wait four years for a PENALTY SHOOTOUT?!?! What does that have to do with football? What other sports are decided in such a stupid way? Imagine in a horse race if there was a tie, and they decided to determine the winner by seeing which horse can piss the farthest? Or basketball, lets see which team can dribble the most times in a minute? Which F1 car can hold the most gasoline? Absolutely stupid.
Conclusions:
1) The goal is TOO fricking small. Why can't people realize this? They're still playing by rules invented hundreds of years ago when people were a meter tall and didn't have growth hormones to increase their jumping ability. Two hours and no goals??? come on!
2) The game needs more referees or some type of instant replay system (that won't interrupt the flow of the game).
3) Just play the game until someone scores a goal, let each team have extra substitutions in extra time. No more shootouts.
4) FIFA really has to crack down on players who fake injuries with severe penalties, bans after matches when the replay shows they were totally faking it.

Materazzi has denied insulting Zidane about his religion or his geographical origin. We will know when they tell us. They will tell us, I'm guessing.
No one seems to consider Zizou was exhausted. He had asked to be replaced about ten minutes before the head butt and his coach completely ignored him.
Though an extremely respected player it is known Zidane does from time to time let off anger in questionable ways (on the football field). So said the french newspaper Liberation.
What I find "interesting" (sarcastically) is how different this head butt and Totti's infamous spit are being treated.
Totti was crucified, no one cared about the intensity with which he had been provoked or the fact provocations had lasted for the whole game.
The german player being disqualified for hitting an argentinian after the game seemed Italy's fault too with the accusations of Italy broadcasting those images long enough for Fifa to take notice (????).
If we lose our temper all is good. We are just fitting in the stereotype. If someone else does against us it's still our fault because the other stereotypes won't have it?? What's that?
Materazzi is not jewish. He is a roman catholic.

Because that wasn’t Zidane first time acting like a real professional *** during a match. Read the following article of his past violent history. After all, I guess he really wanted to go out with a Bang! Well, he accomplished that pretty well and perhaps the FIFA should consider to make a trophy for Zidane being the “Biggest Jackass”of the professional soccer player history.
Eight years ago, Zidane was red-carded for stomping on an opponent while playing Saudi Arabia. At this World Cup he collected two yellow cards and was suspended for France's third group match against Togo.
Five years ago, Zidane was also red-carded for butting Jochen Kientz in a Champions League match for Juventus against Hamburger SV.
Now, would anyone be surprised of what he did on the World Cup?
Oh and I am sure the French weren’t aware of his past violent history…Right!
After all the better team won the 2006 World Cup! Viva Italia!!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinedine_Zidane
Since both players refused to comment on the incident, there are various allegations about what led to Zidane's violent outburst. His agent, Alain Migliaccio has claimed that a "very serious" comment by Materazzi provoked the attack.[ Reportedly, the deaf forensic lip-reader Jessica Rees was employed to analyze the video sequences with the help of an Italian translator. According to these reports, Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. - and first told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for a ****** like you." As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore." Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: "So just **** off." According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo, a lip-reader claimed that Materazzi twice called Zidane's sister a prostitute . Earlier claims about Materazzi having called his opponent a "dirty terrorist" have been denied by Materazzi, who reportedly said: "It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means

Probably because of his well know bad temper. Some say it's due to racial slur used by Materazzi. Materazzi supposedly insults him and his religion. (Zidane is a Muslim)
BUt then again how do we explain his attack on a Saudi Arabia player a few years back. Surely the Saudi player would not have insulted Muslims! I think Zidane was very frustrated after Buffon blocked his second shots and his expression showed it.

1) I dont believe france wouldve won the world cup even with Zidane, Trezeguet was Ribery's substitute, and I think he should have been playing from the start of the tournament. He still wouldve missed the penalty (BARELY).
2) Zidane's mother was hospitalized the day of the final. Materazzi insulted his mother, and that is low.
3) Zidane's actions may not have been appropriate for a professional athlete, however it is completely justified.

Rude words were expressed by Materazzi, he made a comment insulting Zidane and his family -- More to the point, of wishing him and his family an ugly death (At a time when Zidane's mother was very ill). He followed these comments with "go F yourself" The rest is history.

Seconds before the head butt Materazzi expertly tweeked Zidane's nipple. A feeling of unexpected sexual arousal shot through Zidane's body, causing his blood to race, but his brain to overload. Never having experienced this overwhelming sensation before at the hands of a man - or a woman - Zidane's mental grip on the world collapsed and became even weaker than the French army. In an instant, the realisation that he was gay and his entire life had been a sham hit him in the chest like a balding frenchman's unusually angular head. In a state of utter confusion poor Zidane was afraid, his fear quickly bloomed into hate and manifested itself in the vicious chest-head-butt - the single nastiest, most inappropriate spectacle to occur in football since someone let that retarded looking stick-man Crouch do the robot dance.
