well becaues a tunnel is a better way to keep a navigation channel open and it is a better way to make a straight line but that is about it tunnels cost alot more then a bridge and it takes longer to dig a tunnel then build a bridge so really tunnels only have 3 reason to be built 1: keep navigation channels open 2: to keep a straight line and keep grades low 3: and to hide a road in a big town (i.e Boston , MA )

I guess that you can't fell off a tunnel, but a bridge - yes. A tunnel is more expensive to built but it withstand bad weather conditions.

Less noise pollution for the citizens to endure, takes up precious space above ground, opens up opportunities to companies for fair trade, etc.
