find some topic you're really interested in... so much that you can spend a couple of years studying it intensely. Go to a university professor and ask is she/he can assist you in your research... and then the process of reading, more reading, and even more reading can start... at some moment you will start writing yourself, and once you've finished your book/dissertation, you've earned your Ph.D.
(I just started writing it!!)

not quite sure what you mean.
usually an undergraduate degree (3 years) followed by a masters degree (anything from 1-3 years depending on course) and then a phd (anything from 1-3 years depending on course and how long your research takes and whether or not a masters was included with your phd).
Phd is usually a research project of some kind that is carried out by the student and marked by your mentor or personal tutor at the university.
call the university your interested in for a prospectus.

8 years of college, plus a thesis, maybe a book, and a heck of a lot of training. You'll need money too. Good luck if you do it. I'm going into my 4th year of college. If I can afford it, I might stick around. ;)
