I would suggest having a professional work on it before doing anything else. Especially if the wax has color. The heat from the wax most likely opened up the pores in the carpet and made it easier to absorb the color from the spilled wax.
if you try a few other options before calling professionals, you may find you are setting the stain in more permanently

I'm assuming this is similar to candle wax?
Take an old washcloth or hand towel and lay over it. Use a hot iron and press down on top of the towel above the wax. The wax will re-melt and get absorbed into the towel. You can use the tip of the iron to really work deep into the carpet. Keep moving the towel so new clean areas absorb the wax.

You might try placing an absorbent cloth on the spill and ironing it. Some of the wax will go in to the cloth. Keep working at it and you should get most of it. If heat isn't doing it, you could try ice cubes to really harden it and pick it off. Last resort, if it's shag type carpet, is to cut it out. Professionals will come in and cut out the section of carpet and replace it, also.

Get freezing spray ...spray it on the wax, whack it with a knife handle and itll crumble,,vacuum it up! The iron method will soak the wax into the carpet...this way gets more of it up.
