The term pH can be broken down into two parts:
1) "p"; represents the mathematical symbol for -log (negative logarithm) of the number in question.
2) “H”; represents the chemical symbol for Hydrogen.
The correct way to write this is by using a small "p", and a capital "H". "pH" By changing the way it is written will make it mean something completely different.

pH stands for the power of Hydrogen. It is the negative log of hydrogen concentration. Thus pH=-logbase10[H+] where the hydrogen ion concentration is expressed in moles per liter.
In general terms, pH is a measure of acidity or basicity. 7 = neutral. Below 7 is acid. Above 7 = base. Remember that this is a logarithmic scale, so a substance with pH 5 is 10 times more acid than something with pH 6 and something with pH 4 is 100 times more acid than something with pH 6.

A pH of 7 is considered "neutral," higher pHs are basic and lower pHs are acidic.
Remember, that being a log scale, a pH of 10 is much more basic than a pH of 9, and a pH of 3 is much more acidic than a pH of 4.
