Who agrees that penalty shoot-outs are an unsatisfactory way to decide a match if the score is still tied after extra time?

With any penalty, the advantage is 90% with the kicker and the goalkeeper can only guess and hope he dives the right way. Its all down to sheer luck, and who can keep their nerve under way too much pressure. There is no real football skill involved in it...almost anyone can blast a ball at the goal, and its just chance whether it goes in or is saved.

For important competitions, it is a big shame that the winner is decided with this lottery of a system. Italy are World Champions today, but it is certainly not the best way to win it in this manner.

It would be fairer, and much more exciting, to use the "golden goal" method, where the first goal scored in extra time wins the match.

I dont believe "golden goal" matches would last for ever. All the players become very tired in extra time, so it is much more likely that more mistakes might be made, allowing more chances for a goal to be scored.

Penalty shootouts are a good in that they test skill of the shooter and goalkeeper. They're really exciting but not so good when the team you're cheering loses. Luck is also a great component which I think is an unfair way to determine a winner especially in a world cup final. I think France played really well yesterday, they had a lot of shots on goal(5 to be exact) unlike Italy's 3. But Italy's defense was unbreakable so that penalty kicks were a must.

The location of the penalty kick is ridiculous, in my opinion. There is such a massive net and the guy kicks it from a very close position. Unless he totally goofs, he has a VERY good chance of scoring. You're right - the goalie basically has to guess where to dive. If they moved it back a bit it might even things out.

Golden goal is good, but it looks like they want to give each team an equal opportunity to score. Since it's so tough to score, though, it might be better to just go with the golden goal rule.

Well, the matches could last forever if niether team actually scores during extra time. It isn't the most skillful way of ending a match, but FIFA needs some means to end a game as a last resort.

Yes it is true, plus it often mental effects teams who rather prefer to sit back and wait for penalty to come instead of risking an attack.

Golden goal is not a solution because that may actually make game last forever(like few days or something)
I guess best option would be to have as many group stage games as possible, without any frigging penalty's. like second stage can also be held as group stage instead of the stupid play off system

You must be French!

Actually, I am prone to agree with you, but I'm generally bored to tears by soccer (football). Still, each team has an equal number of chances, but I see your point.
