Magical thinking.
Magical thinking is a fundamental dimension of a child's thinking.
Magical thinking involves several elements, including a belief in the interconnectedness of all things through forces and powers that transcend both physical and spiritual connections. Magical thinking invests special powers and forces in many things that are seen as symbols.
'Magical thinking' is the interpreting of two closely occurring events as though one caused the other, without any concern for the causal link. For example, if you believe that crossing your fingers brought you good fortune, you have associated the act of finger-crossing with the subsequent welcome event and imputed a causal link between the two.
They believe that if they don't forward those emails, something terrible will happen to them.

Don't know why somebody would start that, but there is a threat - if you don't forward it to so many people, thist terrible thing will happen...

I got furious with that back when I was in fourth grade and those letters were just handwritten notes you had to copy three or five or fifteen times and drop them to different persons. NO WAY!

haha i've often wondered the same thing.
especially the ones that are like, 'this chain letter has been going since 1885!' or something like that... then how is it all of a sudden an email? cause i'm pretty sure they didn't have computers in 1885. ><

anyway.
yeah.
they are quite bothersome.
because guess what.
i didn't send it to 50 people in 5 minutes
& i'm still alive and kickin.

the reason is to create a database of "Live" email addresses. If you do forward these email on, the addresses you send it to are relayed back to the originator, so for instance if you send it to 10 Friends he/she will have 10 new "live"addresses to spam! if your 10 friends pass it on then they have another 100 and so on....... Do not forward them!!! If one has a funny pic then save it and then send it on separately.

People have nothing better to do. I also hate it when the email says that I'll have 7 years of bad luck if i DON'T forward it!

Who knows? Superstition? And I am often surprised by who sends them. Some people I would never expect to fall for such stupidity and waste of time...

Because if you don't forward them a kitten will die or your nose will fall off, or maybe hair will grow out of your ears.

You never know.

is also a way for companies to trace and gather addresses to send more junk mail to,
usually there is money involved somewhere
report or block the stuff,
i told off family for sending, that it is disturbing
and like POSTAL chain mails should be illegal
