There are some great programs out therer that you can use to compose your own music. We have one at my house called Music Print and it allows you to even write all the different instruments lines and plays it for you when it is done. You can do the cheap way of copyrighting it by sending in the mail to yourself so that you have the date stamp on it, just don't open it. There are many companies that you can send the music to that will review them and often buy the music from you. You can just start looking at various music companies, depending on what kind of music you write and start mailing of demos or sheet music. They will often even buy just lyrics.

Start playing in dives and work your way up. Record a demo and pass it out, send it to labels that accept such material. Post your songs on MySpace or some other such site. It takes a lot of work.

pay for some studio time, get together a demo, and send it to any and every record company out there......odds are at least one of them will like you if you really are talented, and maybe even if they don't like YOU they might like your songs and there is alot of money to be made in writing songs, and that is something you can do anywhere and without a busy touring schedule
