Why is the table tennis racket or ping pong racket shaped circular?

Table tennis strokes move in every direction. Being close to round there is balance while striking from the center and equal distance for "English" to be applied in every direction.

I can't think of what better shape there would be.

the game is sort of like tennis so i think they wanted to keep the racket shape about the same way. doesn't that make sense?
