Mozambique is the poorest country in the world with only US$90 per capita GNP (1997).

Only 25% of the 18 million citizens have access to save water. My brother works in Maputo and they rather buy their drinking water in South Africa, or boil all water twice with purification tablets before using.

It's hard to disagree with the statistics that "Achiever" has reported. However, the only fair way to make comparisons is in terms of purchasing power. For example, a farmer in Central China might be able to live a healthy life (if not a pleasant one) on a couple of hundred dollars a year. In the United States, without public assistance, the person would starve to death on that income.

The same phenomenon holds within countries. For example, a family with an income of $30,000/yr. could live fairly well in northern Mississippi, but would be well under the poverty level for New York City (but above the national poverty threshold).

So, the Population Reference Bureau in Washington, DC, computes the GNI PPP per capita for each country that reports statistics. This is the Gross National Income in Purchasing Power Parity divided by the total mid-year population.

Given this definition, the poorest countries are:

Sierra Leone, West Africa, $500
Malawi, East Africa, $570
Tanzania, East Africa, $580
Dem. Repub. of the Congo, Middle Aftrica, $630
Burundi, East Africa, $630
Madagascar, East Aftrica, $730

Note: In all of the above, people must live on less than $2 /day.

Other Aftrica countries are not much better off.

In the Western Hemispher, Haiti is the poorest country, $1,610.

By contrast, the United States, $36,110.

And, the wealthiest nation, using the GNI PPP per capita is Luxembourge (Western Europe), $53,290.

The reason that I've taken time to respond is that there are various ways of stating data statistically. So, you really have to understand how the computations are made and what they really represent.

P.S. All of the annual incomes stated above are converted into U.S. dollars. (Again, this is to make a more accurate comparison).

Yet another World Bank report has put Nigeria at the top of the world's poorest nations. The new publication released at the ongoing United Nations summit offers new estimates of total wealth including produced capital, natural resources and the value of human skills and capabilities, which show that many of the poorest countries in the world are not on a sustainable path. It cites Nigeria as an example of resource-dependent nation, which could have produced capital five times higher than it did in 2000, if only it had made a moderate effort to save. The document: "Where is the Wealth of Nations? Measuring Capital for the 21st Century" launched by the World Bank listed the top-10 richest countries and top-10 poorest countries Sub-Saharan Africa dominates the latter, with Nigeria standing on the ninth position before Ethiopia, which has the lowest level of total wealth. Switzerland heads a list in which the top-10 performers are all Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. European countries-of which two are Scandinavian-dominate the list and non-European economies are the United States and Japan. Madagascar, Chad, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Nepal, Niger, Congo Republic, and Burundi are

ahead of Nigeria in ranking. Their wealth per capital varies from $5,020 to $2, 859 while natural capital stood between 265 per cent and 42 per cent. The produced capital of the countries was put between 180 per cent and 6 per cent, and intangible capital 64 per cent and 39 per cent. Figures for Nigeria's wealth per capital are $2,748, natural capital 147 per cent, produced capital 24 percent and intangible capital is minus 71.
