It has a role in gene selection and genetic variation, thereby improving the fitness of individuals of a species. The long answer...

Its genetically bred into us to procreate, by giving us the drive, and means to do so ensures our survival as an organism. The desire to "mate" is strong because if it wasn't, why would we do it.
