Actually, we are still expanding. At some point we will begin the converging process to an infinite density and have another big bang. I think it will happen at 4:22PM GMT on 29th Feb 3069.

Cosmologists believe we are still expanding. It hasn't been decided if we will continue to expand forever, or reach a maximum size and then start contracting. It all depends on the total amount of mass in the universe, which no one has any good measurement of.

If they count only the visible matter (i.e. the stuff they can actually see or detect like stars, galaxies, quasars, pulsars, warm dust, etc) then we come up short on mass for eventual collapse.

However, they believe there is a large amount of so-called dark matter in the universe. They know this because when they look at many galaxies and look at the velocity of the stars in them, the galaxy should be flying apart, yet it isn't -- something must be holding it together.

By examining several galaxies, they try to establish the ratio between visible and dark matter, and make an adjustment to their calculation of the total mass in the universe, and then (coincidentally?) we are very close to having just enough mass to recollapse.

No. All evidence says the universe will continue to expand until matter is spread thinly and evenly. The stars will become too far away to see. It doesn't matter. Life moves on. This place is not a destination but a wayside in an eternal journey.

Your referring to the big crunch or the omega point.
there's a book or two out there saying the universe has been and will continue to go from bang to crunch to bang infinitely and has been forever.

no, actually, according to scientists, we are dilating to zero density. they believe at some point convergence will begin, but all proof we have now says that we will keep expanding forever.

Why do persist in this belief that the Universe began with a "Big Bang"?

Maybe it began with a little whisper.

yes we are. from creation to creation we go from visibility to invisibilty. since we are visible right not or u can see our existance in the physical then now we must go back to invisiblity or pure spirit. as far as the big bang yes the earth is full and has reached its capacity and bout to blow
