What Zidane done, was wrong. He is one of France's famous and most talented football players the world has every seen just like maradona is remembered for the had of god incident. Zidane will be remebered for the silly challenge in his last game, but lets not forget that both players are truly heros in the football world. People don't like to remember great things people have done, and can sometimes can get unoticed altogether. Why do ppl concentrate on the bad things. I would shake Zidanes hand if I saw him in Newcastle! I think everyone else would too!

Big Star or no star, his actions were disgusting during the finals and frankly he should have been stripped of the award and it should have been given to the next top player in line. That wasn't the first time he's done something like that.
WC 2006 was great but this sport really needs to change some rules. Too much acting with the diving is getting out of hand from all these players and get rid of the penalty kicks after 30min of extra time.
These players get paid big bucks and penalty kicks isn't the way to win the WC.
Like Hockey, play till a goal is scored! What is this I'm hearing that FIFA is considering making the nets bigger. Several WC goals were fantastic that it was so hard for any goalie to save with the original net size? And or playing with 9-10 only instead of 11. That's just BS.
What's over is over until South Africa in 2010. VIVA ITALIEN!!! Maybe next WC France!

Well, he has got the award as the most invaluable player of the championship.
Looking at the way of the French team that is true, it is not likely the French would have reached the final without Zidane.
So he might deserve the Golden Ball Award, but he'd also deserve an award as most ambivalent player.

That's a good question, and I would not want to be one of the judges who have to decide on it.
On one hand he is a very experienced player who has just ended a long and successful carreer. He has always been an inspiration to others in the past and done few things wrong. That has to count for something.
But then there was his tragic and totally unnecessary exit from the World Cup and from international Football after he lost his temper and obviously his senses as well. That deserves some punishment beyond the red card.
The question is: should one condemn a man and his lifetime achievement over one moment of madness? I honestly don't know.

The Golden Ball Award is given to the most outstanding player in the FIFA World Cup. Zidane's a great player - regardless of his wacky headbutt against Materazzi in the finals - but was he really the most outstanding player in this year's tournament? I don't think so. There were definitely more deserving players on the contenders list.

A big player like zidane should managed to keep his temper, being a hero is not about scoring goals or smart playing only but it is also about having a good manners and ethics. Anyway, i really think what he did was a big shame to his career and particularly to his country. i used to support and admire him but after what he did, i don't have any respect for him and i really think is not good enough to be a role model or a team captain. However, Fabio cannavaro deserved to get the golden ball award. Anyway what happened happened and there is no use to talk.. who will listen to us!!!!!

I think Zidane deserves a leather boot on his head after the rude nature he showed in the final of world cup. What if the guy, he had hit with his bald head had a serious injury? I think its a sad end to a brillient career.Zidane deserves no mercy and should be deprived off all the awards he won.

I do not agree with what Zidane did on the pitch, but still think he should keep his award.

His punishment for the headbutt was be sent off in the final of the world cup! Thats pretty humiliating I bet. Why punish him again when I imagine he is gutted about that Red Card already!

Yes without a doubt it was`nt given on last night`s performance but on each and every game Zidane has played during the tournament. I am not saying the incident was`nt terrible but the award was decided before it happen. If you go to the World Cup web page you will see it was decided at half time

Zidane received the Golden Ball because of his talent and ability throughout his career and in the WC06. His play in the beginning of the WC was lacklustre... His headbutt was a cheapshot and I honestly think he got it as a consolation prize for all his career contribution to international football. I would've preferred to have seen Figo receiving it despite the fact they didn't make it to the end.
