Unlike some of the answers presented, a hypothesis does NOT give you a "vague idea" of what you're going to do in your experiment. It does the opposite -- it tells you EXACTLY, precisely, what you will need to prove in order to satisfy your theory. The formulation of a hypothesis and the testing of it requires the use of logic, which is a very formal subject.

Without a hypothesis, a scientific study has no objective and therefore does not know what variables to control or minimize, and your research results will have no value.
Most research begins with a question: does this plant have any value as a medical product? Much too broad. So the researcher focuses: is it an effective antibiotic? The the hypothesis: this plant has an ingredient that will kill staph aureus. Test: grind the plant up and apply the result to a petri dish with aureus growing on it. You will either get dead aureus or not, or maybe a surpising result that will lead to further testing.

Because without the hypothesis one may bnot be able to start the research process or the scientific method. Why? Because you have nothing to test, nothing to difute or refine. You can't conclude without it.
Remember: The experiment or the rersearch process is being utilized onlky if one needs to prove an assumption.

a hypothesis is mainly a scientific guess, it's part of the scientific method to make inferences before actually putting the experiment into action, and observe results. another reason is for purposes of comparison, by comparing actual results with your initial hypothesis. =)

So you can have a general idea of what you are doing. Then you do your tests, with a control and come up with a conclusion at the end,.

so that you can use data to prove it- if you cannot, your assumption happens to be wrong
