Usually XP will detect new hardware when I put a network card into the motherboard and then the wizard will pop up and I will be able to install the drivers. I have tried to manually recognize the hardware but that did not work. I have also tried different slots on the motherboard and even a sound card but the computer will still not detect them.

maybe your network adapter is not on the Windows HCL, or your pci-slot might be damage or the network card itself is not working

Windows has a standard that's called the "HCL" (Hardware Compatability List). So if a machine is on the HCL then it will run with Windows and XP will have the driver's for it. However, some hardware Windows doesn't have drivers for, so you need to go to the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer's) website and download the correct drivers.
