The study of rocks is PETROLOGY. The study of minerals (which form rocks) is mineralogy, and the study of the earth in general (including rocks, minerals, faults, structures, and some would argue water, weather, and the moon) is geology.

Geology is the study of the Earth, which includes many disciplines, one of which is Petrology, the study of rocks. Petrology takes its origin from the Greek root petra, rock.
The 3 main branches of Petrology are:
Sedimentary Petrology
Igneous Petrology
Metamorphic Petrology
One of the best methods to study rocks (composition, mineralogy, texture) is to thin-section them, and examine under a microscope. This is referred to as Petrography.
