That's a big dream. I'm an England fan, but have to say with all honesty Italy would have won - they played well, and never gave up - although they lacked the energy in the last half of extra time, their defence never dropped. England would have needed to have kept possession and play the short-ball just to slow the pace down against Italy.
No team ever deserve to go out on penalties - to play for 120 mins then lose on a penalty is heart-breaking - I feel sorry for the French, they played a good match.

England focused on the long ball, didn't have a lot of creative play and in fairness their defense looked shaky too, despite having the best midfield players any team could offer. Italy on the other hand could match the quality in midfield (Pirlo, Del Piero, Grosso), has excellent defenders (Materazzi played well, Cannavaro is superb) and adequate attackers too of course. If England had had different tactics, played with more gusto and creativity, then they might have been in the final. Had they been in the final playing like they did though, Italy would have been firm favourites. I guess individual quality could have meant a goal for England, but Italy would've had three at least.

No. England was a pathetic team right from the beginning. And no one outside England and the British media gave them the slightest chance of winning the World Cup.
Many English people seem to think that because they have done it once, 40 years ago on home territory, they can do it again and again and even have a kind of god-given right to the World Cup.
Well, the rest of the world is more realistic and gets on with life and Football, while England is still dreaming, long after they lost in the Quarter-Finals.

What the point of asking. It's always the same old story. England always lose to the top teams.
However, they should try to beat teams like Portugal and Sweden first before moving on to the powerhouse teams.
Give England another 40 years to improve. So I won't get my hopes up high with Euro 2008 or World Cup 2010.

Yes!
I am of the opinion that anyones of the 16 in the second round could have beaten anyone of the others.
World Cup Final England vs Italy 2:1 (aet)
So that would have been England's third WC-victory !!
(I also dreamt they won in 1990, OK?)
As it is a dream we could also say that Theo Walcott scored that final goal in the 117th minute.
Time to wake up I think.

I think that England couldn't beat Italy because Italy is a very smart team and use the opportunitiesvery well. They send and transfer the ball from defenders to their forwards very very fast. Also the goalkeeper of Italy is very better than England. And The deffender of Italy are very strong and well and Italy is very famous because of its defenders and we didn't many mistakes by Italy defenders in this worldcup so I think if England played against Italy,Italy win the match.

Italy. England played badly throughout this tournament, and with Rooney suspended they weren't going to beat anybody. Not that they're a bad team, they have some good individuals but just played badly on the whole. And Robinson is a disaster.

At the end of the day, England were tactically inept and if we had got there the italians would have been far too well organised and our 1 sided and uncreative attacking would have got us no where.
Italy would have probably scored and then sat back while we didn't have any attacking options on the bench as Rooney would have been suspended and owen would have been watching from the stands.
We were wrecked from the minute sven announced the squad.
