my new laptop came with a wireless lan usb dongle, can someone tell me what itis please?

Basically plug it into a usb port and install the software (if needed) and you'll be able to connect to any nearby wireless devices/access points (assuming they allow you).

I'm guessing since you don't know what this is that you don't have wireless setup in your house.

If you set it up you will be able to roam around the house and still access the net. (To set it up at home you will need some kind of wireless access point - will depend on your setup at home as to what you need)
