great answer Tenley, corn snakes and rat snakes are excellant climbers. In Tennesee I have seen corns go straight up stucco walls and fairly smooth trees. It is really hard for them to do so on smooth surfaces. A snake can actually stand straight up almost 2/3 of its length on a smooth wall. They can't go all the way up a perfectly smooth surface without a bit of angle. I have seen them go straight up glass tanks to almost the full length of their body but then they fall.

Some snakes can climb vertical surfaces, such as a tree trunk or wall, if the surface is rough enough.
Have you ever handled a cornsnake? They're partially arboreal, and are great climbers. In cross section, these snakes are shaped a bit like a loaf of bread, with a flat bottom and domed top. Along the sides of the belly scales (scutes) there's a ridge of muscle. (You can feel it easily if you run your finger gently along that section of the scales -- most snakes will flex up into your touch.)
When climbing, cornsnakes can stiffen this ridge of muscle and press the edges of their belly scales into small cracks or roughnesses in the climbing surface. Each scale acts like a small climbing piton. It doesn't seem like much, but given that a snake has hundreds of belly scales and great flexibility, some species of snakes can climb surfaces that even humans couldn't.
Not all snakes climb well -- mainly ground-dwelling snakes (many kingsnakes, for example) don't have those prominant muscle ridges, and their belly scales are smaller and smoother.

I saw a 4 1/2 - 5 ft black snake climb a flat, smooth wall on a mobile home last night.

A glass dancing snake is usually a stressed out one. I suggest you invest in a thermostat to lower and raise your temps at will, without thermostats heat mats get pretty hot and could burn,so it could be he is trying to escape from the extreme heat. Another thing i would do is put some type of background up or add a lot of decor, all that open clear space can make your snake feel unsafe and he wants out. Invest in a good thermostat and Thermometer .

YES. They can. And they can, because Snakes are 85% muscle. They stiffen their muscles and are able to climb vertical / smooth walls.

Actually they can't. If the wall is at a slight slant and/or is textured so they can grip it I suppose they could, but no, snakes cannot climb a smooth vertical surface. They can straighten out almost the whole length of their bodies against the wall (ex. aquarium sides), but once they stretch up too far they will invariably fall over, because they need at least part of their body on the ground to brace themselves.
