its not in the religion itself....its actually a supersticious belief.
some say its bad to cut your nails at night....but actually theres no harm in doing so.
ppl used to say that during the times when there was no electricity and they had to use oillamps...they said you shouldnt cut your nails at night because they didnt want someone to accidentally cut their finger...and some ppl still follow this till today even when theres electricity
as for the no shaving on thursday thing....i suspect ppl believe its bad luck

Thursday is known by the name "Guru-waar" or "Brihaspathi-waar"... Both denote great Masters, meaning symbolically that they take over the routine of the day. Perhaps cutting hair had significance of preparation prior to the day of count-down of spiritual take-off, and hence prescribed only on previous day.

we hindus consider tuesday as a day of god Hunman, he is 'bal bhramchari'. he bron on same day... as a respect to him, we don't do cutting or shaving, which is sign of grooming.
